“Paon” and “Pigos Uno” by Edbon Sevilleno

“Coins strewn on the stairs of the gallery introduce the theme of the exhibit. As one reaches the landing one sees mouse traps appropriately labeled Lagpit lined up on the wall juxtaposed with one of three paintings on the lobby entitled, Pigos Uno. The message is clear - the prospect of earning well entices OFWs to go abroad.”

Remembering Desert Storm

“Desert Storm” Collage Art by Edbon Sevilleno

It was my first year to this country. And in just six months time I was in a middle of a war, the first Gulf War known as the Desert Storm. Yes I was there... there were speculation that scuds from Iraq will target the city where I stay, imagined the scenario, though the US fire power came, but still it's scary. You could hear the sirens drilled. The government was issuing gas mask and instructing what and where to go. And we were just expats, the modern sacadas.

“Vices and Desires” By Edbon Sevilleno

“Alak” Collage Art by Edbon Sevilleno
If you happen to live in a society where liquors with alcoholic substance were considered illegal, then you will find these constant reminders of blotted bottles of whiskey in magazines. Pathetic...

“GINHIMUSLAN” Acrylic on canvas by Edbon Sevilleno

“GINHIMUSLAN” ( Rape Victim ) | 100x100cm | Arylic on canvas | By Edbon Sevilleno

Art can be a powerful tool for social change. Somehow through art I could express my views of what was happening around me. In this painting which I decided to paint subjects that dealt with the plight of the OFW's, it's an overdue concept but it is still doing magic. But I still feel I'm a bit subtle on my approach, or I'm just trying to be safe. Though Direct Peque Gallaga commented that “these were powerful statements” refering to my Gallery Orange BRANDEAD 2009 exhibit.

“Greed Stone” Collage Art by Edbon Sevilleno

“Greed Stone” Collage Art by Edbon Sevilleno

One day I was walking on the shores of ARAMCO at Al Khobar, I noticed these little black stones which lies on the beach. I took one and I was informed later that it was from those oil spilt washed out from those burning oil fields from the wars in Iraq. A stone formed from greed. It's indeed greed that cause all those wars.

“Marah” Collage Art by Edbon Sevilleno

All these didn't happened overnight, it was a constant impressions of feelings and experiences in a day to day interaction. Resulting to a somewhat reciprocal determinism theory, they might hate me for using these iconic irony. This is one of those many collage work I did on these series. I've used found objects... buttons, camera lenses, plastics, and images that caught my eye... images of naked women heavily blotted. If someone had tried to erase such reality, then this must be worth recorded. Be it in history then.

Something came up in the early 90's.

If you happen to be in these place, you may find images of women blotted heavily by black markers in magazines. Strange... but later you get used to it. And something came up in mind... why not used this as an ID with my collage works. And I did, and this is where it started that I came up with these series.
